Solvang

Solvang, the Danish Capital of America, celebrated it’s centennial in 2011. The city was built by Danish farming immigrants, and named after the unique sunlight beloved by all who live in the area: Sol = Sun and Vang = Valley. Literally, Solvang translates to “Valley of Sunlight” and the name fits so, so well. The town is situated next door to the historic Mission Santa Inez, part of the Spanish Mission system established in the 1700s. In the 1950s, the town elders of Solvang incorporated their beloved Danish farming settlement into cityhood and became oriented more toward cultural and destination tourism than agriculture. Visitors frequent the quaint Danish-style downtown village area year-round, from around the world.
